In 2017 and 2018 record-setting catastrophes forced hundreds of thousands of Americans from their burned, flooded or otherwise damaged homes.
Very few insurance carriers investigate the resulting additional living expense (ALE) claims. That means the industry is experiencing its own flood—attempts to collect inflated or fraudulent reimbursements for replacement housing, food and related costs.
Los Angeles attorney Jon Colman, a frequent speaker on preventing these falsified claims, says, “We see both insureds and service professionals such as contractors and clean-up companies working the system. They understand the opportunities for abuse.”
