In July 2015, California-based insurance fraud authority and attorney Jon Colman presented two educational seminars for California Casualty in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The classes are part of a fraud awareness program the carrier requires of employees who interface with customers.
In these seminars, attendees learned how to distinguish between a legitimate accident and one deliberately staged — from the difference in vehicular damages to injuries. They also heard about signposts for recognizing inflated claims.
These topics are particularly relevant, as a 2013 study by FICO showed 57% of insurers surveyed expect an increase in fraud losses on personal insurance lines, primarily in auto and home insurance.
